Another school year is over in much of the world. Teachers and homeschool parents – take the time you need to relax and rejuvenate, to reward yourself for a successful school year. You deserve it!

But then it’s time to step back and assess your school year. How did it go? What were your strengths, and what areas can be improved?
Since learning is an ongoing, lifelong journey, summer is a great time to learn new skills and perspectives so that you can start the 2017-18 school year as an even more effective educator.
Where to start?
Curriki, of Course!
Curriki offers a free Computational Thinking course, Problem Solving through Computational Thinking for Educators, that provides computer science teachers with an understanding of what CT is, why it is important, and ways they can incorporate CT skills into their classrooms. Comprised of five distinct “bite-sized” learning modules that introduce the concepts behind CT, this course will spark new ideas, expand teachers’ skill sets, and provide concrete ways for you to help your students excel at critical thinking and problem solving.
Oracle Academy, a Curriki partner, also offers summer workshops to teach teachers how to teach computer science.
Professional Development
PBS TeacherLine’s facilitated and self-paced PD courses are designed to benefit both beginning and experienced teacher, with topics include science, reading, social studies, math, instructional strategies, and instructional technology.
The Library of Congress’s Summer Teacher Institutes offer week-long professional development programs for K-12 educators in the nation’s capital. (Sessions are full this summer – plan to do this next year!)
Other professional development opportunities include Exploratorium , Vista (for science educators in Virginia) and Capella .
Grow Your Craft

Fueling Education offers a number of ways to grow your teaching craft throughout your summer days. Here are a few suggestions:
- Dive into a book. Get reading and think about how the words on the pages can affect the students that walk through your doors this falls. Then write your ideas down.
- Head to a conference. Whether an EdCamp, a conference sponsored by your local educational service center or a national conference, conferences are a great way to connect with educators that are passionate about what they do.
- Get outdoors. Regardless of what or where you teach, there is much to be gained from being outdoors in your community and taking in the culture and surroundings that define it.
- Find balance and press “pause.” Clear your head, go for a walk and find the time to decompress from the year that is behind you.
- Spend time with your family to reconnect with why you do what you do.
Summer Travel
We suggest you think about the classroom during your summer travels and see what ideas you can bring home to enrich your students’ learning experience.
Happy summer!
