Introduction:

TIME: 1 day. PREREQUISITES: Some computational experience with positive and negative numbers. Students do not have to have complete mastery of the rules for adding integers (the game will provide more practice), but they do have to have some experience with them. That way, if a student make a mistake during the game, somebody at that table will catch the mistake.

Group Size: Small groups

Learning Objectives:

Students will:

• Understand and use a computational procedure for integer addition problems.
• Develop creative strategies for winning a card game by applying knowledge of integer addition.
Guiding Question:

How can we model integer addition with a simple picture? Can we find patterns in integer addition problems that make them easier to solve?

Materials:

• 1 deck of cards per group (print out the card blacklines on photo paper and cut them out).
• Several copies of the Gameboard for each group (need 1 for each game played).
• (1) copy of the Demonstration Handout for each student.

Procedures:

1. Tell students it's time to apply their knowledge of integer addition using a strategy game.
2. Pass out a copy of the Demonstration Handout and lead the class through the Demonstration PowerPoint. Try to include as much interactive discussion as possible as students figure out how to keep score during the demonstration game.
3. Let students get in groups of about 4 people.
4. Pass out materials to each group (1 deck of cards and several copies of the Gameboard for each group).
Assessment:

This whole activity is an informal assessment, if you walk around and observe how students are doing with the integer addition problems that make up the bulk of the game.
