The United States was in serious trouble. Following its disastrous surprise attack on Pearl Harbor, Japan held the upper hand in the Pacific. Japanese soldiers, wearing the rings of American colleges and high schools, could speak English fluently. Educated in the U.S., these men routinely intercepted, and decoded, American military messages. The U.S. needed what has always eluded a country at war: an unbreakable code.

The North Atlantic seas south of Iceland were relatively calm on May 9, 1941 as a British convoy made its way from England to Nova Scotia. Escort ships, like the corvette HMS Aubretia, were desperately needed to protect supply ships from the ever-present threat of German U-boats. On board the destroyer Bulldog, senior ship of the 3rd Escort Group, Sub-Lieutenant David Balme had no clue his impending heroism would give British intelligence what they needed to decipher the secret code of the Third Reich - Hitler's "Enigma" encryption machine. Commanding the Bulldog, A.J. (Joe) Baker-Creswell had no idea his instinctual decisions over the next several hours would turn the tide of the war against Germany. Video and background history are included in the link.

By the fall of 1944, American military leaders realized that Japan would be unwilling to surrender. Vicious battles between the two sides, on several Pacific islands, convinced military planners (like General LeMay) to take drastic measures. On the 24th of November, 1944, B-29s began to regularly drop bombs on Japan. Tokyo, a city whose buildings were mostly made of wood at that time, was a prime target. When American pilots dropped incendiary bombs, blazing fires killed people and leveled cities. This clip - from the documentary "World War II Battlefront" - features a segment on "The Last Stronghold (November, 1944)." It is not easy to watch.

Just before Britain joined the war, in 1939, the government began a mass evacuation of urban children to protect them from German bombs. Most traveled to the countryside by train. For a time it seemed as though evacuation was premature - until the blitz began. At the end of the war, many children returned to find their homes destroyed and family members dead. This clip contains historical footage and images.
