In this activity, middle school students use a constructed Electrophorus device to review and build upon the basic concepts of static electricity. With these devices, built by students using common household materials, students can investigate charging by conduction, friction and induction. The resource includes detailed lesson objectives and clear guiding question, a materials list, procedures and suggested assessment. Student worksheets are exceptionally organized and clear, and include questions throughout the investigation, as well as a more formal assessment at the end of the activity. Answer keys are provided for all student assessment and anticipated lab results. All handouts are uploaded as both a Word document and a pdf, for the user’s downloading preference. This focused and well-developed activity can be used immediately in the classroom.
