Instructional Purpose:

These questions help students locate and identify important details in the text. In order to respond to them, students must read the text carefully and understand details of such things as character, plot, and setting. In general they do not ask students to interpret or analyze the novel.

Suggested Uses:

You may use or adapt the reading questions in a variety of different ways, including:

  • As homework. As you assign reading for students, provide them with reading questions to go with each chapter.
  • As reading quizzes/informal assessments. As students read each chapter, informally assess their reading comprehension of each chapter. You may ask that they respond to the questions in writing or you may use the questions in discussion to gauge student understanding and comprehension of the reading.
  • As prompts for class discussion. Focus students on the reading by drawing selectively on the reading questions for each chapter.
