Information - Tuck Everlasting Novel Study
Unit
Students will be exposed to the exceptional writing of Natalie Babbitt while reading the novel, Tuck Everlasting. Various activities will be provided to reach the needs of all learners, including gifted and RTI students. Students will work on comprehending texts while applying metacognition to their work through questioning. With interactive work between students in each text, children will gain a better understanding of the text and truly experience a more well rounded novel study. This project allows students to understand the value of reading, as well as gain a better understanding of a text through the application of question answer relationships. All too often students just read a text and really never delve in deep; however with this novel study students take their comprehension to the next level.
Students will be exposed to new vocabulary, writing activities, character development, and questioning strategies. With a wide variety of activities to stimulate all learners, students will walk away with an abundant amount of skills to help them fine tune their reading abilities.

An overview of the novel is provided, as well as a suggested weekly and daily schedule for completing activities for the Tuck Everlasting Novel Unit.
Reading guidelines outline the expected behavior of students in each group.
Students will be introduced to the reading strategy of questioning from the text, The Story of Ruby Bridges by Robert Coles. They will learn the difference between the 4 types of question-answer relationships.
Students will be introduced to the novel, Tuck Everlasting, while completing a Anticipatory Guide. Then they will share their results in a think-pair-share activity. A vocabulary pretest is given to determine any prior student knowledge of the vocabulary from the text.
Introduction of ten vocabulary words for week one, an overview and explanation of the Tuck packet to be completed throughout the text, and guiding questions to go along with the Prologue.
Students will read chapters 1-8 of Tuck Everlasting, focusing on character development, chapter titles, question-answer-relationships, as well as discussion questions. A variety of vocabulary review activities are included.
Students will read chapters 12-17 of Tuck Everlasting, focusing on character development, chapter titles, question-answer-relationships, as well as discussion questions. A variety of vocabulary review activities are included.
Students will read chapters 21-Epilogue of Tuck Everlasting, focusing on character development, chapter titles, question-answer-relationships, as well as discussion questions. A variety of vocabulary review activities are included.
A study guide for the final comprehension test is provided, along with 3 different final projects for students to demonstrate their knowledge of Tuck Everlasting.
A final vocabulary assessment for the whole class, as well as the enrichment group. Guidelines for all three final project choices to demonstrate understanding of Tuck Everlasting.
