This resource is an external link to a lesson plan for Eve Bunting’s book, The Wall. Designed for multi ages, the lesson’s objectives are to learn about the Vietnam War by “responding to the words, illustrations, and symbolism” in the book. The book is read aloud and the illustrations are analyzed. Students learn life goes on and to make inferences about the Vietnam War based on the book. The lesson can also serve as a springboard for writing letters to veterans at local Veteran’s Hospitals. Well designed questions are included in this lesson to prompt discussion, thinking and making inferences. Follow up activities and informal assessment using writing prompts are provided as well. Since the book itself does not teach about the war itself, it can provide an opportunity for more teaching and learning.
