After completing this lesson, students will be able to list the key provisions in the Constitution relating to the judiciary, explain the importance of an independent judiciary and how the Constitution provides for this independence, discuss the basic facts of Dred Scott v. Sanford (1857) with an emphasis on how and why it became a Supreme Court case, and point out differences between a trial conducted in a district court and an appellate court hearing.
