Unit looks at racism in the novel The Secret Life of Bees by Sue Monk Kidd. Character development. Final project immerses students in ABC Book genre. Freshmen created their own ABC book about the novel and presented them to neighboring 1st grade class.

This resource is a novel unit plan that is intended to be used by teachers as an introduction to the novel unit for A Secret Life of Bees. In this unit, students will analyze A Secret Life of Bees by Sue Monk Kidd by focusing study around the following five major themes of the novel: loss of innocence, the relationship between parents and children, racism and prejudice, guilt and forgiveness. Students will investigate the novel in two major ways: a close reading of the novel through a mixture of group and independent study and thematic writing extension assignments. The unit products include ongoing reading responses, weekly exams, character diaries and a thematic literary analysis essay. This resource is part of the The Secret Life of Bees collection.
