This unit focuses on spiraling concepts of the atom, the electromagnetic spectrum, energy, material properties and nanotechnology. All lab activities are student-centered inquiry labs which are open-ended. The unit also includes two POGIL activities, which should be completed within student groups of 3-4 students.

This unit of Light Emitting Diodes focuses on a series of three student-inquiries which guide students through a thorough investigation into the workings of a LED on the macro, nano and symbolic scale. For this unit, students will need access to the following materials per group of 3-4 students: High Voltage Digital Power Source (0-12V) with current adjustment Digital Multimeter 8-10 insulated wires with alligator clip heads 5 or more different visible LEDs comprised of a single extrinsic semiconductor material Incandescent flashlight LED flashlight Film canister 5 ohm resistor Stereoscope, microscope or magnifying glass This unit will take a minimum of 7-85 minute block class periods for completion.
