The Magnitude of the Solar System

This activity attempts to help students visualize the enormity of the solar system, both in terms of distance and relative size of the planets. The students literally walk through the solar system and examine model planets and distances that are accurately scaled to known sizes and distances in our solar system.

Calculating the Scale
by Meredith BeatonThis lesson can be done with students in preparation for the "Magnitude of the Solar System" activity. Students are asked to set up proportions for the scale of the solar system and calculate the sizes of planets and distances in the model.
