Pieces of candy will be used to represent atoms in chemical equations. Conservation of atoms in a chemical equation will be shown by having the same number and kinds of atoms on each side of the equation. One lab partner will use his/her candy to simulate the reactant side of the equation, and the other partner will simulate the product side.

Mole Conversions and Law of Conservation of Mass Students will explore the dimensional analysis involved in conversions of different units of substances in relation to the Law of Conservation of Mass. The following video will give a very brief overview of these conversions and by the end of the lesson; students should be able to use these concepts throughout the semester.

Mining for Silver

This activity has been chosen as a demonstration because it is an interesting chemical reaction to get students interest and attention, to introduce a unit on chemical reactions. Another reason for beginning the unit with this demonstration is that I wanted to get total class participation on a self discovery path to the Law of Conservation of Matter.
