Study plot*

For each group of four students:

Preparation:

Read the background information in the Teacher’s Manual. (Please see PDF)

Basic Skills Development:

Observing

Comparing

Discussing

Predicting

Evaluation Strategy:

Students will observe their study plots and describe various changes that have occurred in their plot over time and give plausible explanations of why they have occurred.

Vocabulary:

transients

predicting

Objective: Students will observe their study plot and note any changes that have taken place since their last observation and give plausible reasons for the changes.

What changes occur in a specific environment?

Discuss with students changes that go on in environments that are familiar to students and discuss why those changes occurred. Discuss the results of those changes.

Students are to carefully observe their study plot for a third time. Students should be encouraged to look for any changes in their study plots.

Students should be given ample time (30 minutes) to observe study plots carefully.

Record observations on the Student Activity Sheet for Learning Experience 7.

As a class, share any changes that were observed and why they may have occurred.

Discussion Questions:

What changes did you observe?

Why do you think these changes take place?

Were there any environmental factors involved in the change?

Did you observe any transients?

What changes can you predict for future observations?
