Objective: Students will study an insect in their study plot and identify how they benefit the environment through research.

How is a particular insect suited to live in the study plot?

Ask students to look back at previous activity sheets to identify various insects that they observed in their study plot. Going back to the study plot may help students identify insects if none were listed previously.

Direct the students to pick one insect to research from the several found in their study plot.

Refer to Student Activity Sheet for Learning Experience 10 for questions students need to research. Go through the questions with the students. These are just sample questions. Students may want to add or to change the questions based on the information they find. Discuss the reference materials they can use to find the appropriate answers. (encyclopedia, books, videos, etc.)

Discussion Questions:

What are the insect's body parts?

What body parts keep this insect safe from its enemies?

What food does the insect eat and how does it get its food?

Where does this insect live?

Describe the life cycle of the insect.

How does the insect help or hurt the environment?

The teacher may choose to have the students write the answers in paragraph or report form. A picture of the insect may be drawn and labeled. Students can share their information with the class.
