This resource is a lesson for 5th grade students to explore different types of writing genres including personal experiences and eyewitness accounts. Civil Rights are discussed and the focus of the lesson is on Rosa Parks. The book Rosa, by Nikki Giovanni is read aloud and the scenes from it - Rosa at work, on the bus, NAACP meeting, the public walking, etc. are reviewed. The students are then instructed to choose one of the scenes. Students are invited to write a person journal entry as if they were in the crowd or to write as if they were telling the story to someone who was not there.
