• In this comprehensive five to seven week unit, early elementary students will use a variety of basic science skills to observe and classify rocks and fossils, then study sand and soil. Finally, students will identify dinosaur adaptations that helped the animals live in their environment. This resource is provided as part of a kit available in the Cattaraugus and Allegany counties of New York State, USA, and this unit does focus on native New York fossils and rocks. Each “kit” in the Curriki repository includes a teacher’s manual and student activity book. The teacher’s manual includes a unit overview, scheduling information, extensive and clear background information materials, preparation instructions, discussion questions, assessments, extension ideas, a glossary and teacher references. Each student manual includes clear, reproducible student handouts and a glossary. After supplies are initially gathered, these excellent lesson materials can be immediately useful in the classroom.

  The learning experiences in the Rocks, Fossils, and Dinosaurs kit supports the New York State Elementary Science Core and its focus on understanding the living environment and physical setting. Through the use of the skills of observing, classifying, collecting data, interpreting data, and manipulating data, students will investigate the properties of rocks, fossils, and dinosaurs. Students will observe and classify rocks and fossils for the basic properties of color, size, shape, and texture. Many of the rocks and fossils in this kit have their origin in New York State. Integrated hands-on math activities are also included in this kit. More About CABOCES Welcome to the Math, Science, and Technology Department (MST) of Cattaraugus Allegany Board of Cooperative Educational Services (CA BOCES). As a department of Instructional Support Services (ISS), we provide Math, Science, and Technology kits along with support services to meet the needs of the individual districts in our area. The BOCES Teaching and Learning Center at Allegany provides hands-on math, science, and technology kits to over twenty area school districts in Cattaraugus and Allegany counties. Our department provides forty-three different varieties of kit topics. The kits cover topics in math, life science, physical science, chemistry, and earth science. Each kit contains a teacher's manual, student activity book, materials inventory list, instructional video, and materials needed to complete each learning experience. Each kit aligns with the New York State standards and prepares students for the New York State assessments.
