PARCC is developing a series of online professional learning modules to help teachers, counselors, school leaders, and school and district testing coordinators understand the new PARCC Assessment System and put the new high quality assessments to work for them and their students. These tools will help educators learn how to read results from the assessments, make inferences about the results, and identify learning gaps in time to make relevant instructional decisions and modifications. The first two completed online professional training modules focus on the PARCC Common Assessments Overview and the PARCC Accessibility System.Future professional online learning module topics include: Introductions to the PARCC Mid-Year Assessment, PARCC Diagnostic Assessment and the PARCC Speaking and Listening Assessment.

The PARCC Educator Leader Cadres (ELCs) help each state build and expand the number of educators who understand, support and feel ownership of the successful implementation of the Common Core State Standards (CCSS) and PARCC assessments. While states organize a range of activities for their K-12 communities, each year, PARCC will bring together teams of K-16 educators from across PARCC states to develop expertise on the CCSS and PARCC and to help them become leaders in their states and among their peers. These meetings, both virtual and in-person, are opportunities for educators to build expertise in the CCSS and PARCC by engaging in deep analysis of the CCSS and aligned materials such as the PARCC Model Content Frameworks, sample items, assessment blueprints and more.ELC members have now met multiple times throughout the past two years. For all materials developed for these meetings by PARCC, ELC members and National Math and Science Initiative staff, please go here.

Model Content Frameworks

by Gregory Hobbs

The PARCC states are seeking feedback from educators on the draft K-2 Model Content Frameworks, resources to assist educators who wish to use them in implementing the Common Core State Standards, and also to guide the development of the formative tasks and diagnostic tools. The frameworks – one for math and one for English language arts/literacy – were developed by PARCC state representatives, educators, and experts in standards and formative assessments. The frameworks serve as a bridge between the standards and these tools in a variety of ways, including by clarifying areas of emphasis in each grade and what changes in the standards from one grade to the next. In grades 3 through 11, for which PARCC has previously published frameworks, they served as foundational documents to guide development of assessments. In grades K-2, they will serve as guides for developing diagnostic tools and formative tasks that teachers can use to get real-time data on how their students are doing and where they need help or enrichment.

Performance level descriptors outline the knowledge, skills, and practices that students performing at a given level should be able to demonstrate in each content area at each grade level to signal that they are academically prepared to engage successfully in further studies in each content area the next grade's material, and later, at the high school-level for students to demonstrate that they are college and career ready.  The PLDs communicate expectations to educators about what types of performance to focus on for each grade level and provide information to local educators for use in developing curricular and instructional materials.

Evidence statement tables and evidence statements describe the knowledge and skills that an assessment item or a task elicits from students.  These are aligned directly to the Common Core State Standards, and highlight their advances especially around the coherent nature of the standards.

There are two types of samples found on these pages: Task Prototypes, which were released in August 2012; and, Sample Items, which were released beginning on August 19, 2013. The task prototypes were created to provide viable early models to guide item development. The new sample items represent the current state of PARCC item development and provide users a snapshot of what the 2014-2015 assessments will look like.

The purpose of the tutorial is to demonstrate the navigation and tools available on the assessment technology platform (TestNav 8). The tutorial will contain a sequence of screens that demonstrate basic TestNav 8 navigation and tools. The items appearing in this tutorial are not PARCC items. They are samples used to allow students and educators to gain familiarity with the technology platform that will be used for PARCC assessments.
