This lesson should be used as an introduction/review of expository essays. Students will learn the different components and their logical order in an expository essay through prewriting.

Educator should prepare an example of an essay map.

Materials:

Procedures:
 

1. Show students an example of an expository essay. Identify the components of the expository essay: introduction, ideas or reasons (1, 2, and 3), supporting details for ideas, and conclusion.

2. Present topic for next essay: “Have you ever wanted to change the world? If you could change one thing to make the world a better place, what would it be? Think about the thing you would change. Think about the reasons you would change it.

3. Set-up students with the essay map interactive. Allow them to move through the steps to prewrite for their essay.

4. Print-out essay map for student to keep for reference.

5. Allow students to evaluate their prewrite print-out based on rubric.
 

Assessment:
 

The prewriting activity will be self-evaluated based on rubric provided.
