Poetry Out Loud Website

by Sarah Lorntson

This annual contest has students memorize and deliver a dramatic reading of a poem. Even if you don't have your students participate in the contest, there are still valuable resources on this site for teaching poetry. This resource is part of the Poetry Unit and the English 10 course.

The acronym TPCASTT (Title, Paraphrase, Connotations, Attitude, Shifts, Title, Theme) is helpful for students who are learning how to analyze a poem. When I assign a poem for homework, students must complete TPCASTT in their notebook along with the reading. This resource is part of the Poetry Unit and the English 10 course.

This activity requires students to read poetry in order to find common poetic devices. I go to the school media center and check out about 40-50 books of poetry (nearly the entire collection). Then I have students use these books to find the items on the worksheet. Students enjoy reading and sharing poetry, and they often find a new favorite poem or poet. This activity would also work well on computers. You could direct students to sites like poets.org that have vast collections of poetry. This resource is part of the Poetry Unit and the English 10 course.

Assign this to students when they finish the Poetry Devices Scavenger Hunt. It's fun to have all their favorite lines of poetry on the wall as you study different poems. This resource is part of the Poetry Unit and the English 10 course.
