• This is a simple and clear mnemonic device to help the student understand a poem. TPCASTT stands for Title, Paraphrase, Connotation, Attitude, Shifts, Title, Theme and guides the student toward interpreting the poem, putting the poem into his or her own words and extracting a message from the poem. This strategy offers a step by step way to analyze a poem.
