TPCASTT is an easy way to analyze poetry. Remember that when you are reading a poem, the writer has chosen every word very carefully to convey certain meaning. It is like "condensed" language.
Title: What does the poem’s title seem to mean when you first read it?
Paraphrase: In your own words, what is each line saying?
Connotation: What are the emotions or other meanings attached to certain words?
Attitude: What is the speaker's feeling about the poem's subject?
Shifts: Where in the poem do changes in time, space, feeling, or tone occur?
Title: Now that you've read the poem, what new meanings do you see in the title?
Theme: What is the speaker's message to the reader?
