This collections contains many resources suitable for a middle school science teacher, and which comply with the National Education Science Education Standards.

The eight categories of content standards are

  • Unifying concepts and processes in science.
  • Science as inquiry.
  • Physical science.
  • Life science.
  • Earth and space science.
  • Science and technology.
  • Science in personal and social perspectives.
  • History and nature of science.
The sequence of the seven grade-level content standards is not arbitrary: Each standard subsumes the knowledge and skills of other standards. Students' understandings and abilities are grounded in the experience of inquiry, and inquiry is the foundation for the development of understandings and abilities of the other content standards. The personal and social aspects of science are emphasized increasingly in the progression from science as inquiry standards to the history and nature of science standards. Students need solid knowledge and understanding in physical, life, and earth and space science if they are to apply science.

Multidisciplinary perspectives also increase from the subject-matter standards to the standard on the history and nature of science, providing many opportunities for integrated approaches to science teaching.

Welcome to the Math, Science, Technology and Health Department (MSTH) of Cattaraugus Allegany Board of Cooperative Educational Services (CA BOCES). As a department of Instructional Support Services (ISS), we provide Math, Science, and Technology kits along with support services to meet the needs of the individual districts in our area. The BOCES Teaching and Learning Center at Allegany provides hands-on math, science, and technology kits to over twenty area school districts in Cattaraugus and Allegany counties. Our department provides forty-three different varieties of kit topics. The kits cover topics in math, life science, physical science, chemistry, and earth science. Each kit contains a teacher's manual, student activity book, materials inventory list, instructional video, and materials needed to complete each learning experience. Each kit aligns with the New York State standards and prepares students for the New York State assessments.

This is a unit consisting of 4 lessons in building structures to design specifications. It was written with North Carolina curriculum goals but meets National Science Education Standards "Science and Technology-Content Standard E" for 5th-8th grade. Students will move from the construction of a spaghetti cantilever, to a paper skyscrapper, to a crash test wall and finally build and test earthquake proof houses. The materials needed are simple and inexpensive. This is a wonderful introduction for students to the world of engineering.

The Rendezvous with a Comet Teacher's Guide has curriculum and instructional materials for implementing a 4-6 week unit associated with the Challenger Learning Center mission by the same name. This unit provides for 3-4 weeks of pre-mission activities, and for several days of post-mission activities.
