This game is a fun way for students to practice integer addition. It also prepares students to use the same rules (with a different deck of cards) to practice integer subtraction. It's especially important for students to draw LOTS of pictures of integer subtraction versus addition problems to understand the deep connections between the operations. The game will provide a fun context for all of that practice in subtraction. But it's important that students learn the rules of the game first in a simplified context. That's why it's good to introduce the game now, with addition...in addition to the facts that it's just plain fun and educational.
