Inspired by Neil Postman's great book The End of Education, this lesson will allow students to answer a very difficult question: Why do we educate? That is, why do kids go to school? What's the point of it? Through discussions in small groups, the quick creation of a small group poster, and a journal entry, students will finally get to answer the question they may ask themselves every time they wake up for school, or sit bored in class.

This short story turns the classic Ray Bradbury sci-fi novel into a one-page short story. Originally written in 1953, this story of the dangers of censorship and the loss of ideas involves firemen in a dystopian future in which books have been outlawed. In this future, firemen are in charge of burning all books, rather than putting fires out.
