• This lesson is part of the Empire collection. The lesson has clear objectives and detailed procedures with time allotments and all of the necessary resources. There are some specific classroom references that would need to be changed in order to use in any classroom. There is a very good "Do Now" review of the previous lessons. The lesson also includes a reading on the move from rural to urban communities and the effects of the move on the Africans. It is a simple, accurate reading, however, the assignment that follows is a bit confusing. Finally, there is an excellent and relevant homework assignment that has the students ask an adult about what they have learned.

Objectives: 1) SWBAT analyze the reasons why many Africans moved from the countryside to the cities. 2) SWBAT describe the challenges and disappointments most Africans found once they made it to the cities. This resource is part of Unit 2: Empire and the Social Studies 7 course.
