Aim: How do we solve problems with trigonometric ratios when no diagram is given?

Learning objectives: Students will be able to draw right triangle diagrams from word problems.

Prerequisite knowledge: Students should be able to solve triangles, (find all missing sides and angles,) using SOHCAHTOA.

Motivational problem: I walk 4 miles north and 3 miles west. Draw a picture of this route and then find the distance from my starting point to my ending point.

Key Ideas: The angle of elevation is measured up from the horizontal line of origination. The angle of depression is measured down from the horizontal line of origination.

Important questions: Is there more than one way to draw a picture from a word problem? How do the answers change based on how your draw your diagram?
