• This is an engaging opening lesson that could be used as part of a unit on race and racism in America. Students explore their own perceptions of race and racism and then use a song about racism from a musical to discuss the topics. The lesson provides teachers with step by step instructions and covers objectives, materials, procedures, and an assessment. The only missing component of the lesson is the lyrics that can be easily accessed at the following site: http://www.stlyrics.com/lyrics/avenueq/everyonesalittlebitracist.htm When using this lesson, it is important to prepare students to be sensitive to the issues that are being addressed. The song includes some derogatory language that many would consider offensive. As students explore their feelings about race and racism, special attention should be paid to conducting a respectful discussion.
