The purpose of this unit is to introduce engineering concepts and principles to junior high school students to increase student interest especially females in engineering. It contains design and hands-on activity, students will design a process to make recycled paper in the class. Unit sections include: Section 1: What Is Engineering? Section 2: How to Design? Lesson 3: Sustainable Building was developed in tandem with Architecture for Humanity's 2009 Open Architecture Challenge: Classrooms, in keeping with the standards outlined here. The 2009 Open Architecture Challenge: Classroom is inviting architects, designers, students, teachers and parents to imagine the classroom of the future. The Open Architecture Challenge is an open, international design competition. It is hosted once every two years on the Open Architecture Network. This year with partner Orient Global, the challenge is focusing on classroom upgrading and design. Anyone can participate and the winning design will receive $50,000 for their school. Principles of Engineering is a broad-based survey course that will help student explore and understand the fields of engineering and engineering technology, as well as other high-tech career possibilities. Students will expand upon the problem-solving skills gained in Foundations of Engineering to create solutions to engineering challenges. They will investigate various engineering systems and manufacturing processes. This project-based course will enable students to experience engineering through theory and hands-on problem-solving activities.

Ergonomic Chair Design

This is a unit consisting of 4 lessons in building structures to design specifications. It was written with North Carolina curriculum goals but meets National Science Education Standards "Science and Technology-Content Standard E" for 5th-8th grade. Students will move from the construction of a spaghetti cantilever, to a paper skyscrapper, to a crash test wall and finally build and test earthquake proof houses. The materials needed are simple and inexpensive. This is a wonderful introduction for students to the world of engineering.

Lesson focuses on the engineering behind building a spring scale and its use as a measuring device. Students work in teams to design, build, and test their own spring scale that can measure the weight of an apple using everyday items. They compare their designs with those of other student teams and reflect on the experience.

Students explore the biosphere's environments and ecosystems, learning along the way about the plants, animals, resources and natural cycles of our planet. Over the course of lessons 2-6, students use their growing understanding of various environments and the engineering design process to design and create their own model biodome ecosystems - exploring energy and nutrient flows, basic needs of plants and animals, and decomposers. Students learn about food chains and food webs. They are introduced to the roles of the water, carbon and nitrogen cycles. They test the effects of photosynthesis and transpiration. Students are introduced to animal classifications and interactions, including carnivore, herbivore, omnivore, predator and prey. They learn about biomimicry and how engineers often imitate nature in the design of new products. As everyday applications are interwoven into the lessons, students consider why a solid understanding of one's environment and the interdependence within ecosystems can inform the choices we make and the way we engineer our communities.

Student teams will test rocks to identify and record rock properties such as luster, hardness, color, etc., and classify rocks as igneous, metamorphic and sedimentary. They will complete a worksheet table with all of their rock properties, and then answer some worksheet questions to deepen their understanding of rock properties and relate them to the cavern design problem.

What is Measurement?

In this 8th grade unit, students will bridge their understanding of measurement from 7th grade Math to a new level which is required for the further development of Mathematical Skills. Students will gain a better understanding on the needed skills when solving for both direct and indirect measurement. Through the performance assessment students will design in small groups a 4,000 square foot home. Not only will students complete a scale drawing of their design they will also be building their design as well. This allows students to appreciate the amount of details that are required in the buildings that we look at and go into on a daily basis. Overall, students will understand that there are multiple ways to represent measurement and that measurement is standardized. With measurement being standardized, students will come to appreciate that multiple professions use measurement. This is why we are able to appreciate many of the luxuries we engage ourselves in on a daily basis. This unit on measurement allows students to demonstrate their ability to set up proportional relationships, convert from one set of units to another and to both find and make comparisons of directly and indirectly measured objects.Repository CitationRisinger, Catherine, "What is Measurement?" Students will use simple materials to design, build, and test a model of a free-standing structure used to support overhead road signs. They begin by learning about the engineering design process and researching about support structures. They then work in groups to design and build their own sign supports. The final designs are tested to see how they stand up to two different types of loads.

The purpose of this curriculum project is to update the current 7th grade computer technology curriculum to better reflect the 21st century. It is also meant to reflect the relevant skills which come from the most recent technologies that are currently available. Additionally, this curriculum is meant to maintain unity between Grand Avenue Middle School and Merrick Avenue Middle School where the course is taught. This updated curriculum creates learning standards that allow for additional teacher customization of units and allows for much flexibility in its presentation based on teacher experience and preference. It is designed for use with a teacher website in mind. As each student throughout the course will be exploring web design and using their individual site as a portfolio, the teacher should also be utilizing this dynamic resource as an organizational and instructional tool. As should be expected with the utilization of continually growing modern technology, the curriculum allows for growth with expanding and updated district computer and information resources. Additionally, including in this curriculum is a unit in which students briefly explore the concepts which are thoroughly discussed in Technology 8. The Introduction to Engineering unit briefly exposes 7th grade students to the concepts mentioned in the Project Lead The Way curriculum while maintaining alignment with the Introduction to Computers curriculum. Although the unit is brief, it will provide them with introductory knowledge that will help them to be more successful in Technology 8. Finally, this curriculum project is meant to align with newly adopted evaluation standards which gauge teacher effectiveness. This is completed in part through student pre and post examinations meant to measure both student growth and achievement.
