Day 3 of 4, Introduction to Animation with Flash

Goals for today

  • Managing multiple timelines
  • Beginning serious work on individual projects
  • Challenging thinking around inversion, flipping expectation
  • (2pm) Start off with a visit to the galleries

  • Visit Cornelia Parker's "Hanging Fire (Suspected Arson)"
  • Consider the role of time / temporality of this installation
  • Consider the materials and the suggestion of authenticity
  • Walk around the piece, stand close, stand back, squint your eyes
  • What is moving here? What role does movement play?
  • How does the title influence your experience of the piece?
  • Squint your eyes to collapse the depth of the piece and see it as a single silhouette
  • (2:30pm) Head outside for a writing exercise

  • Distribute the writing helper sheet
  • Look out at the environment and consider the number of assumptions and rules in operation
  • Have students fill out the first part of the sheet
  • Assign each student a number and ask them to write the number at the top of the sheet
  • Have students hand in their papers and shuffle their seats
  • Redistribute the papers to new people
  • Have students fill out the second section
  • Repeat the shuffle, redistribute the papers to new people, and fill out the third section
  • Return the papers to the original writers and consider the comments they've received
  • Give students a chance to talk out their challenges, revelations
  • (3:00pm) Working with new vectorized drawings

  • Return to the lab
  • Distribute .fla with vectorized drawings
  • Use selection tools to choose five images from the group
  • Remove the rest of the images
  • Create a symbol from each of the five images (reminder: f8)
  • (3:20pm) Create a background

  • Make a new layer
  • Rename the layer
  • Draw a rectangle
  • Gradient or solid fill
  • Lock this layer
  • (3:30pm) Diversifying behaviors

  • Explore using scale and rotation to create a variety of behaviors for your symbols
  • Create different layers for each symbol to generate different movements
  • (4:00pm) Go to the gallery

  • With Chan in mind, work on this new piece using the new iconography
  • (4:50) Wrap up
