A Survey About Science

Find out what your friends and family members think about science. You will share information with your classmates to create a picture of your community's knowledge about and comfort level with science. By the end of this lesson, you will have a better understanding of what science is and isn't. This will form a strong basis for your study of evolution. In this set of exercises, students will study rivers and waterways around them by using the Internet, maps, and their knowledge of local landscapes. The students will use an EPA Web site to investigate what is upstream and downstream of them. They will also look at graphs of flow in familiar river locations on a live U.S. Geological Survey Web site. Using small rocks and a washbasin, students will build a model that leads to extending their understanding of streams in different geographic locations. A topographic map exercise will expose students to topographic maps and allow them to look for the origins of streams. Finally, a reading exercise will illustrate the issue of the importance of lower-order streams to downstream areas, and students will be asked to implement their ideas to protect a stream on a dairy farm.

In this activity, students further investigate major landforms (e.g., mountains, rivers, plains, hills, oceans and plateaus). They build a three-dimensional model of a landscape depicting several of these landforms. Once they have built their model, they act as civil and transportation engineers to build a road through the landscape they have created.

Aristotle and Ptolemy

The lesson includes information about the geocentric model of the universe proposed by Aristotle, the "problem" of retrograde motion, and the attempt to maintain the accuracy of the geocentric model by the use of epicycles.

This lesson and assessment are designed to provide students with historical background and information about the astronomical contributions of Tycho Brahe, Johaness Kepler, and Galileo Galilei. Based on the contributions of Kepler and Galileo, the Copernican model of the heliocentric solar system was readily accepted as the accurate structure of the solar system.

Density Science Kit

This unit provides students with the opportunity to observe the property of density. Students will engage in inquiry about why and how some objects (solids and liquids) display the property of density. Students will measure the mass of solids and liquids. Students will experiment with solids and liquids of different densities. Students will also calculate the density of solids and liquids using hand-held calculators. The science skills emphasized in Density are collecting data, manipulating, observing, and predicting. Accuracy of measurement is critical to the success of this unit. This kit has been divided into two sections and can be completed in several ways. For 4th graders, Learning Experiences 1 – 5 should be completed to meet the state standards. In 6th grade, students should review Learning Experiences 1 – 5 and continue on with Learning Experiences 6 – 8 in order to reach a better understanding of density. It is believed that by 6th grade, students will have a strong enough math base to calculate density and the skills necessary to comprehend density at a higher level. Challenge students (usually working in pairs) to create an experiment of their own using pennies and drops of water by following the basic steps in the scientific method. A few ideas … Which will hold more drops of water: cold penny or hot penny; new penny or old penny; and head side or tail side? Student groups have also created experiments to test different substances: different brands of soaps, shampoo/conditioners, or other safe household liquids.Emphasize the need for safety! Each group must have permission before attempting any part of the experiment. If a group has not addressed possible errors or safety rules, have them rewrite the lab until it meets with teacher approval.
