Teaching students the importance of characterizations as a part of literary analysis.

Group Size: Any

Learning Objectives:

At the conclusion of this assignment students will be able to:

  1. Properly characterize characters
2. Understand their motives/why they act in the manner that they do 3. Recognize why characterization is important when beginning to analyze or understand a text.

Guiding Question:

How does each character in "To Kill A Mockingbird" shape our understanding of the novel as a whole?

  1. Overhead Projector
2. To Kill A Mockingbird Novel 3. To Kill A Mockingbird Movie or 4. Clips from To Kill A Mockingbird using YouTube 5. Venn Diagram/Chart Handout

  1. Begin with a complete definition of the word "characterization"
2. As you begin to read the novel discuss what we know of the characters so far 3. Ask questions that will facilitate the discussion of each character (e.g Why does Scout call her father Atticus? What does this suggest about Scout? Atticus? Their relationship?) 4. As each character is being discussed use the overhead projector/ web to display large pictures of each character. 5. Have the students utilize some kind of venn diagram/chart to keep track of their character analysis 6. At the conclusion of your reading discuss how the characters changed over the course of the novel and why. (e.g Scout and Jem's attitude towards Boo Radley)
      • Clips from the movie that aid in the discussion of each character can also be used to facilitate discussion.
(Important scenes include 1. Courtroom Scene of Tom Robinson 2. Final scene in which Scout holds Boo Radley's hand)

The assessment of this module will include a test/in class assignment where each student is to read a short story (that will provided to them). Upon reading this narrative they will have to write short paragraphs that analyze each character, their motives, their actions and what role they play in the short story.
