This folder contains lessons, assessments, resources, activities, and images to support a brief study of centripetal motion and centrifugal force. These resources can be used in support of the "Movement of Earth" lessons (refer to the "Centripetal Motion Cont'd Impressionistic" lesson) or after studying Newton's Laws of Motion in the "Motion" lessons (refer to the "Centripetal Motion Cont'd Physics" lesson). These lessons are interesting and fun for students as they rely on students' intuitive understanding of motion, simple experiments, and the excitement of roller coasters.

Centripetal Motion

This lesson contains a brief introduction to centripetal and centrifugal force, how they each act on objects moving in orbits, and demonstrations of each.

An adaptation of this assessment can also be used for students to evaluate model roller coasters that they build in the classroom. This is the assessment that reflects the lesson "Centripetal Motion Cont'd Impressionistic."

This lesson reviews the concepts of centripetal and centrifugal motion. Additionally, students experiment with height and speed and their affect on roller coaster physics. Finally, students will relate height and speed through potential and kinetic energy and derive the formula for calculating velocity of a coaster car given an initial height.
