This lesson and assessment are designed to provide students with historical background and information about the astronomical contributions of Tycho Brahe, Johaness Kepler, and Galileo Galilei. Based on the contributions of Kepler and Galileo, the Copernican model of the heliocentric solar system was readily accepted as the accurate structure of the solar system.

Collection Contents

This lesson is designed for middle school students with no previous knowledge of astronomy or the history of astronomy. I often prepare my images as a slideshow or printed, large size images for students to understand the story of the scientists behind the science we are studying. This lesson should take approximately thirty minutes, unless you decide to add additional information about any of the astronomers or their contributions.

This assessment asks students to draw on their knowledge from the Brahe, Kepler, and Galileo lesson in order to compare the geocentric and heliocentric models of the solar system and the evidence for each. Additionally it asks students to consider the historical context of the scientific revolution and contemplate whether these advances would have been accepted prior to the 1600's.
