A look at a project in an AP Calculus class at the culmination of of the volume unit. Students will take everyday objects and find the volume using calculus formulas and regressions from statistics while comparing to science content.

At the beginning of the project, this worksheet can be handed to students to help them think about the process and supplies that will be needed. It is an organizational tool and a learning tool to have students help come up with the goal of the project.

After collecting and/or discussing the project planning worksheet. This direction page will get the students started on the process of finding volume. It gives some direction on using the statistics and graphing their solid.

Using the regression capabilities on a graphing calculator, students will take the coordinate points from their graph and try different regressions to see which has the best r-value for each section of their graph. These lines of best fit will be the ones used for the calculus volume formulas next.

With this worksheet, students will take their lines of best fit for each section of the graph and create the appropriate integrals using calculus techniques. The formulas will then provide the approximate volume  of each section.
