"Adopt a Family" is a good project-based cooperative group assignment that can be adapted for upper-elementary school students. Students are directed to spend $250 for food and clothing for a family in need. They are shown a PowerPoint presentation explaining the purpose of the activity and all of the directions. They are then asked to look at websites such as Target.com and Peapod.com to choose what to buy, and they record those items on a sheet that is provided. There is a link to a website where they can graph the data to show how they are spending their money. Although this is a well-designed project, the actual directions and the slide show are very light and are somewhat difficult to read.
