This wonderful resource takes an in depth look at 6 novels and aligns them with common core. For each book, a grade level equivalency is provided, as well as a lexile level, DRA level and Guided Reading Level. The genre and themes are identified. Each lesson includes targeted vocabulary (and the standards that address vocabulary), comprehension strategies (including compare/contrast, infer/predict, story structure, summarize, graphic organizers, main idea/details, etc.) and guides to close reading. Each lesson plan also includes a writing and a grammar section. Questions embedded in each lesson are higher level and designed to promote deep thinking. Works include: Alley Jay and the Underground Railroad, Going West, Love That Dog (a 9 day lesson), Walk Two Moons, War Horse and several poems. The lessons in this rich complete unit are
immediately useable.
