This lesson is part of a group of lessons that include some valuable resources that can be used in studying Gandhi’s life and the independence movement in India. Although the lesson is organized and structured for a specific classroom, a few of the activities can be pulled out and adapted quite easily. It has an excellent opening brainstorm question about what makes a person powerful and there is a one page reading on Gandhi that highlights key aspects of his life and accomplishments. There is also a follow-up activity that asks students to take what they have learned about Gandhi and apply it to a 30 second skit.
One activity in the lesson asks students to use the SOAPS method of document analysis to examine a poster. For those unfamiliar with this acronym, S is subject, O is occasion, A is audience, P is purpose, and S is speakers.
