English Language Learners and their ESOL teachers in grades K-5 participated in the "Our Lives, Our Words" program in order to improve student writing through the use of digital photography. Each class participating in the project completed three writing projects incorporating digital photography. The majority of students showed at least a 1 point growth on the WIDA rubric in their writing level between baseline and summative assessments. Here are the lesson plans our teachers developed and used for the program. Lessons were done in a variety of content areas including RELA, Math, Social Studies and Science.
Each lesson includes a Common Core aligned lesson plan, Expanded WIDA strand (demonstrates student expectations for each language level), student-friendly writing rubric, content rubric, peer editing checklist, and all handouts or powerpoint presentations used.
