The Curriki Team is here to help educators and parents that are coping with closures related to COVID-19. In this blog post, we highlight ways teachers and parents can leverage the lessons and activities we’ve curated in Curriki for virtual learning. Curriki is and always will be 100% free for teachers,
students, and parents.
Curriki’s digital library includes over 81,000 free teaching and learning resources. About 20% can be assigned directly to a student. In this blog post, I’ll show you how.
I’ll also share with you how many “teacher resources” can be easily used by any parent to create a fun, engaging at-home learning experience.
Virtual Learning Resources Collection
I encourage you to start here, with our Virtual Learning Resources Collection. You’ll find sub-collections which contain resources by subject area. The content team will continue adding to the Virtual Learning Resources Collection, so check back regularly.
You’ll find a series of videos, science simulations, and more. Examples: Kate’s Math Lessons – Geometry, Statistics Videos, How-To Writing, Science Simulations.
There are a few ways to assign a resource to your students.
- Copy the URL for that resource and paste it into your LMS, remote learning website, email or whatever platform you are using for this purpose.
- You can also assign the resource through your Google Classroom. Click “More Actions” on the upper right-hand side of the resource page and then hover over the Google Classroom icon. If you are logged into Google Classroom, you’ll be able to share it with one click.
- Sharing the resource can also be done via social media and email.
Leveraging “teacher resources” for a fun, engaging at-home learning experience.
Here’s an example of a Science unit parents can easily adapt for teaching their children at home: NASCAR Acceleration Nation. This is a collection of science resources on physics, speed, and energy made by Scholastic. Resources are designed around the theme of NASCAR. Every lesson includes student worksheets and everything is printable. All parents need for the lessons are a computer printer, and household items such as paper, scissors, tape, markers, ruler, and straws.
There are many lesson plans and activities that we recommend for at-home learning in the Curriki Resource Library. To find activities appropriate to assign to students, navigate to https://library.curriki.org/resources-curricula. Use the tools on the left-hand side to find what you are looking for. You can begin with entering a keyword, such as “algebra” and click the yellow search button.
If you want to see only student-use resources in your search results, check that “Student Facing” box and click Search again.
To drill down deeper, use the “Refine your search” tools to select your subject, grade level, type of resource (video, lesson plan, game, interactive). You can also opt to see only resources that have been reviewed by Curriki, our partners, or members of the Curriki community.
