Demystifies Calculus with Latest Curated OER Collection
CUPERTINO, Calif., January 20, 2015 — Calculus is used in hundreds of different jobs, ranging from economists to engineers and scientists, but many students find it confusing and difficult to learn. Curriki, the leading K-12 global community for creating, sharing, and finding Open Educational Resources (OER), today released the latest curated OER collection, Curriki Calculus, designed to demystify calculus by incorporating multimedia and other interactive exercises. Funded by Huawei Enterprise, Curriki curated OERs along a scope and sequence into standards-aligned modules and includes 5 units with video instruction, exercises, and practice materials – all aligned to standards. This will enable educators, parents, and students to quickly and easily find vetted resources that map to standards and learning objectives. The Curriki Calculus Collection is available free to educators, students and parents.
In the spirit of OERs, Curriki encourages educators and districts to adapt the materials to meet their own needs. Educators may:
- Use the videos to flip their calculus class
- Integrate the aligned materials into their existing curriculum
- Build a brand new curriculum with the OER as the basis
The collection is designed to accommodate many different students’ learning styles and levels of comprehension. For example, students struggling with calculus can use the collection for extra instruction and practice. Others can move ahead of the class’s pace or brush up for the AP Calculus Exam. Specific resources have been selected to enable students to master calculus skills and the knowledge to achieve college and career readiness.
“In response to the many requests and feedback from educators for free dynamic digital content that is organized and aligned with standards, Curriki has taken another step in realizing the vision of a complete series of OER collections spanning K-12 STEM and English Language Arts,” commented Kim Jones, Curriki’s CEO. “We are really excited about sharing this with educators around the world.”
“Huawei is dedicated to education,” said Jane Li, COO of Huawei Enterprise, “It is our goal that all schools will be able to provide anytime, anywhere access to valuable online learning resources like Curikki Calculus.”
Because the Common Core content standards do not extend to calculus, Curriki aligned the materials to content standards modeled after the Indiana Academic Standards for Mathematics – Calculus (Adopted April 2014 – Standards Correlation Guide Document 5-28-2014). These standards cover the College Board’s course description for an AP Calculus AB course, as well as additional topics, such as L’Hopital’s Rule. The Mathematical Practice Standards are taken directly from the CCSS-M, as they apply to all levels of mathematics.
